Economic history of Sub-Saharan Africa, especially West Africa from c.1500 to the present, including contemporary development issues in historical perspective. Specialist research: economic history of Ghana, especially the former kingdom of Asante, particularly cocoa farming, rural capitalism, labour, agrarian institutions and indigenous entrepreneurship. Comparative economic history of Africa, Asia and Latin America. Global economic history in the broadest sense, especially economic development, including industrialization, slavery, culture & economic behaviour, and the interaction of economic and environmental change. The methodology and history of economic history.
