It is with great sadness that King’s College has learned of the death of Sir Stephen Cleobury. Following a long illness, Stephen died peacefully in the late evening of 22 November – the feast day of St Cecilia, patron saint of music and musicians – in York, where he had lived since his retirement in September.

You are welcome to submit a message of condolence here, which will be reviewed before publishing.

Thank you Sir for the music making you provided all these years! Especially your gift of Lessons and Carols. You inspire us to do our best in our leading of worship services of praising God and Jesus Christ as we prepare ourselves on earth today for that time in the future of Heaven!
David Redden

I never met Sir Stephen Cleobury, however his vast legacy has impacted even me all the way in Texas, USA. The first classical CD that I ever purchased was a recording of King's singing the Vivaldi "Gloria" under his direction. Listening to that recording while learning that work with Texas Boys Choir definitely planted the seeds that have now grown into a career as a choir director and church musician. All the while, Cleobury's recordings have made regular appearances in my listening as I have grown. Rest in peace, sir. Thank you for such beautiful music.

The death of Sir Stephen Cleobury is a great loss to the world of English Choral Music. May his rest be in peace, and his dwelling place be in the Paradise of God.
The Venerable C. Thomas McHenry
The Director of Music, Mr. Felix Ebonikase, Organist and the Choir of St. Francis' Anglican Church, Iwaya, commiserate with the family of Sir Stephen Cleobury and the entire music world in particular the King's College Choir, Cambridge, on the passing of the meastro and music legend. We are saddened by the news of his death when we hoped he would be able to retire and still contribute to music in our world. His death is really a colossal loss to the music world going by his valuable and passionate contributions to the development of Church Music particularly in thr manner and level he had taken Carols with the Kings which we all look forward to every passing year. We trust his legacies will live on and his soul to enjoy a place of honour amongst the saints triumphant. Rest in peace, Sir. Stephen.

Death! Where is thy Sting? The news came as a great shock to me. He was my model. May Heaven Open it's Gates and Grant him Great reception into the right hand of God the Father, Amen

One of the first recordings of choral music I ever heard was from Kings, and was the Nune Lessons and Carols. Over the years it has become an absolute must that I hear this service, Sir Steven, I promise to keep listening and keep you in my mind as I soak in the beautiful music that I have come to love so much. Rest easy good and faithful servant, let angel wings guide you to eternal light and rest.
