It is with great sadness that King’s College has learned of the death of Sir Stephen Cleobury. Following a long illness, Stephen died peacefully in the late evening of 22 November – the feast day of St Cecilia, patron saint of music and musicians – in York, where he had lived since his retirement in September.

You are welcome to submit a message of condolence here, which will be reviewed before publishing.

It is hard to put into words the lives you touched not only at King's College, but throughout the world with your musical talent. Many associate you with The Festival of Lessons and Carols broadcast from King's College each Christmas Eve. This year I will be listening with a tear in my eye as I am remembering you Sir Stephen Cleobury. Well done good and faithful servant.
Ronald Clark

You contribution to the choral fraternity is enormous and immeasurable. Your arrangements for hymns especially leaves one thinking about the endless possibilities that God can wrought on us through a GEM like you. Rest in Peace and may generations untold celebrate your good works. We love you from Ghana

A luminary of church music has left us all too soon. Your expertise and talent lives on in your legacy of a rejuvenated tradition at King's and the many sublime recordings we can continue to hear for evermore. Requiescat in pace.

T. Tertius Noble’s hymn “Ora Labora” comes into mind- not only Sir Stephen was a dedicated servant to church/choral music, he was an educator and a very fine musician. He aspired many, musicians and non-musicians alike. His passing on St. Cecilia Day (patron saint of music) will be mourned by many across the world. Requiescat in pace.
