It is with great sadness that King’s College has learned of the death of Sir Stephen Cleobury. Following a long illness, Stephen died peacefully in the late evening of 22 November – the feast day of St Cecilia, patron saint of music and musicians – in York, where he had lived since his retirement in September.

You are welcome to submit a message of condolence here, which will be reviewed before publishing.

Dear Sir Stephen, Thank you for all of the wonderful music we have heard. When prayer is set to music, it means so more. Your life means more now that you are in a better place. The world has lost a great man.
Liam Cummings
I had the honour and privilege of attending many live performances of the Choir under Sir Stephen's direction. Each one is a treasured experience and memory. He was a quiet genius. His passing is a great loss, but his legacy is timeless.
John Kimball
Sir Stephen helped to refine and define my taste in Christmas music with The Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols. His legacy will be a love for beautiful church music music left in many a person both young and old. Thank you, Sir Stephen. May God comfort your family and friends in the days to come. May they rest in the knowledge that music in heaven will be even more divine.
Laura Solomons
Sincere sympathies from Ancór Chamber Choir in Limerick, Ireland. We have been inspired by Stephen’s work and are very grateful to have had the chance to meet with him and hear the KCC choir in Limerick in 2018.

Sir Stephen Cleobury was a man who really enhanced the quality of the choir. He commisioned a new carol every christmas and introduced the annual Easter service. All in all, Stephen did a great job on earth. Now, he is in heaven and listens to the choir of angels. Rest in Peace, Stephen Cleobury!
Julian Domhan
