It is with great sadness that King’s College has learned of the death of Sir Stephen Cleobury. Following a long illness, Stephen died peacefully in the late evening of 22 November – the feast day of St Cecilia, patron saint of music and musicians – in York, where he had lived since his retirement in September.

You are welcome to submit a message of condolence here, which will be reviewed before publishing.

Sir Stephen Cleobury was an accomplished Master of the Musicm whose dedication and passion was second to none. Rest in Peace, Steve!

A truly inspirational, talented and so respected musician. I will always treasure all the CDs and DVD I have of Sir Stephen and remember with fondness the many years I have sat down to listen to the wonderful music from Kings on Christmas Eve and at Easter. With treasured memories, I will once again sit at my local Organ this Christmas as our ensemble relates the Christmas message in carols and lessons and performs some of the wonderful Carols we have heard over the years. God bless you Sir Stephen in your rest.
Andrew Hutley
His musical legacy will last forever. What a fitting epitaph! May he rest in peace and rise in glory.
Andrew Hunt
Sir Stephen was one of the great musicians of our time and also a wonderful person. I will never forget the honour of meeting him when he and the choir came to my church in Dallas in March 2015 and I had to miss half the concert as I had a concert of my own; I was so touched when he kindly said that he wished he could have heard mine. May he rest in peace.
Theodore Harvey
With Thanksgiving for a life well done. Your gifts to the music world will live on in perpetuity. Listening to the various celebrations from King's College has always been a a gift without measure for this Texas girl. May flights of angels sing you to your rest. (Wm Shakespeare)

Though Stephen’s death has come as shock and great loss to us all, I rejoice in knowing that he is happily in heaven. My thoughts are with the members of King’s College and his family.

My deepest condolence to the friends and family of the late Sir Stephen Cleobury. It was indeed Sir Stephen's unending dedication to the world of choral music that brought us the rich and colourful liturgical music to the world stage. His work at King's was indeed remarkable. Thank you Sir Stephen.
