We hope all @kingsfreshers2023 are taking to life at Cambridge like a duck to water. There is plenty to keep busy this week and meet lots of new people, but also beautiful spots to stop and take a deep breath when you need to.

The Library team have been ready to welcome #BlackHistoryMonth for days now, with a very special title on the shelf this year: "The fraud", the latest novel by King’s alumna Zadie Smith. Busy morning for all Freshers and their families, as they wheel their bags and boxes into their chosen College accommodation. We are all thrilled to see them join the King's community, and a large group of student volunteers are helping them navigate the 'staircase' system and secure the last empty barrow. 💜 The class of 2023 cohort is diverse, with students from the state-maintained sector making up 87% of UK graduates admitted this year and around 29% coming from widening participation backgrounds. This week we welcome (or welcome back) many students to King's, but we also see Professor Michael Proctor retire after ten years as Provost. His contribution to King's has been extraordinary, and he has the warmest thanks of the College and the entire King's community. In the latest issue of 'King's Parade', he summarised his long tenure as Provost: "I have chaired innumerable meetings and committees; met with thousands of King’s members all over the world; read to an audience of tens of millions at the 'Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols'; and eaten my fair share of excellent dinners in the Hall! I have also got to know our outstanding Fellows, a great number of students, and many dedicated staff, without whom the College would quickly grind to a halt. It has been a humbling experience for me to see how much this most unusual of Colleges, with its rollercoaster history, its famous alumni and its progressive and informal atmosphere, is so much loved by those who have come into contact with it." 🔔 Last few days to visit our ’50 Portraits’ exhibition in the College Chapel. Created as part of the 50th anniversary of the admission of women as students to King’s, this exhibition reflects a broad cross-section of the King’s community: from the trailblazing women who first arrived here in 1972 to the most recent cohort of undergraduates, and including current Fellows, staff, and alumnae. All fifty portraits were photographed by award-winning photographer @jooneywoodward last spring, and from next week they will remain on display elsewhere in the College as part of the permanent art collection. @cambridgeuniversity #womenatkings #summerincambridge 📸 by @acambridgediary and @timcantab

What better weather to welcome back members who matriculated in 1988, 1983 or 1978 for their reunion event? The three walking tours – of the gardens, the buildings and the Bloomsbury art collection – are now coming to an end, but there is still plenty of time to catch up with friends over drinks and dinner. Thank you to everyone who’s come along and to all the staff in College who help make every reunion so special. 💜
