It is with great sadness that King’s College has learned of the death of Sir Stephen Cleobury. Following a long illness, Stephen died peacefully in the late evening of 22 November – the feast day of St Cecilia, patron saint of music and musicians – in York, where he had lived since his retirement in September.

You are welcome to submit a message of condolence here, which will be reviewed before publishing.

My deepest condolences to the Cleobury family and all those at Kings. A true genius who I will miss greatly especially at Christmas for bringing joy into my home. Rest In Peace Sir.

It was very sad news to learn of the death of Sir Stephen. I recall his visits to Barbados, alone and with the choir. First to giver an organ recital in our Anglican Cathedral and secondly with the King's Choir. I found him to be a true gentleman and a great musician. Through his music he has elevated us all. Interesting that he should leave this world on the day that we celebrate musicians. May he rest in peace. Amen. John Bryan Organist/Choirmaster St. Michael's Cathedral BARBADOS West Indies

We are so sorry to hear of Stephen’s death. We met him first when he came to Westminster Cathedral Choir School where our son James was a chorister. He inspired the choir to great heights & instilled his own passion for excellence in music in all the boys. He continued to follow James’s career in music & helped & encouraged him whenever he could. He will be much missed - May he rest in peace.
