King’s Virtual Language Bus

This online interactive event is designed to inspire and empower students to embrace language learning. The day will involve an array of activities, games, talks, and presentations, offered by academics of languages and literature at the University of Cambridge and students who are taking a Modern and Medieval Languages or Linguistics degree at King’s College.

What's Involved?

The online interactive event will take place on Tuesday 15 April 2025 and will consist of accessible presentations, and interactive activities, delivered by some of King’s College’s languages academics. These will then be accompanied by a combination of  talks, quiz games and presentations, delivered by some of King’s own languages students. These sessions will be aimed towards inspiring year 9 students to consider pursuing languages further at school, and further afield. They will do this by showing them that they may already know more about languages than they think, that “studying language” doesn’t simply mean learning how to speak a language, but can actually open doors to becoming an expert in art, history, politics, literature, cinema and so much more, thereby opening their eyes to the perhaps unexpected career directions to which languages can lead.

This event is completely free to attend.

Where will the event take place?

The event will take place entirely online. 

Event Schedule 

The event will start at 10am and finish by 2pm. There will be plenty of breaks throughout the day. 

Academic sessions will include:

 - 'Teacher Sounding it out: echoing words' - presented by Dr Giulia Boitani

-  ‘German Reunification’ - presented by Professor Godela Weiss-Sussex and Dr Marcus Böick

- 'Languages and the Arts: Visualising the World through Words' - presented by current King's Languages students

- ‘Studying languages from scratch: experimenting with Russian’ - presented by Dr Angus Russell

- 'learning languages in real-time' - presented by current King's Languages students

Eligibility Criteria and selection 

To be eligible for this event, all students must:

- Be a student studying at a UK state school (a school that does not charge fees)

- Be in Year 9 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. S2 in Scotland.

- Top-set/high achieving student. Likely to be predicted 8's and 9's at GCSE.

- Prior knowledge of studying a language not required

How to apply?

To take part in this event, we require teachers to nominate their student(s). Teacher nominations need to be received by Sunday 16 March 2025.

We're celebrating World Poetry Day with a reading of a Cambridge classic ❤️ 'Saying Goodbye to Cambridge Again' is one of the most well-known works of Chinese poet and alumnus, Xu Zhimo. In the 10 years between his admission to @kings.college in 1921 and his death in an air crash, Xu Zhimo transformed Chinese poetry, and Cambridge inspired much of his work. The English translation used here is from 'Xu Zhimo in Cambridge. Life and Poetry.' by award-winning scholar, Stuart Lyons (King's 1962). Research from a King's PhD student has shown conservation efforts are bringing species back from the brink. 🐂🦅🐋 Ash Simkins, a PhD candidate in the Department of Zoology used data from the @IUCN_congress Red List (the world's largest database of species conservation status) to examine over 67,000 animal species. Ash says, “While biodiversity loss is a genuine crisis, it’s vital that we celebrate the success stories wherever and whenever we can. A special performance of Shakespeare's Macbeth opened in King's College Chapel last night to rave reviews. 💀🗡️🩸 The adaptation is directed by King's students Eva and Charlie and features several King's students in the cast and production teams. King's third-year Esther who stars as Lady Macbeth says, "performing with King's students in a place so important to our community is a memory I will have forever." This document is the foundation charter of King’s College which establishes the various lands and privileges granted by Henry VI in 1446. The intricate illuminations depict Henry’s dedication to the Virgin and St Nicholas, much to the approval of his assembled lords. King’s College Archive holds records of the college’s history as well as the personal papers of key Bloomsbury figures and alumni. On International Women's Day we're celebrating the King's women who are striving to make a difference in their chosen fields. 💪Charlotte Proudman (KC 2013) is a human rights lawyer widely recognised as having made a major contribution to changing the legal landscape on ending male violence against women and children. Her book, 'He Said She Said: Truth, Trauma and the Struggle for Justice in Family Court' is released on 1 May. 💪Psychotherapist Jennifer Cox (KC 1996) is an author and speaker on issues of feminism and global mental health. Her book, 'Women Are Angry', was published last summer and won The Times and Sunday Times Best Self-Help Book of the Year. For fourth year undergraduate Dan [📷 1] , completing the @CambridgeHalfUK has been a long-term goal, "Ever since I arrived here, I've wanted to run the Cambridge Half Marathon, but only now am I finally making it happen. I am always inspired by the relationship between discomfort and growth and I can’t wait to test myself mentally and physically on Sunday." Also taking on his first ever Half is King's Fellow and @CambridgeUniversity Proctor Dr Fraz Mir [📷 2], "I was inspired to run by watching others run the London Marathon and to impress friends and family! I also wanted to use it as an opportunity to get fitter myself and raise money for @CR_UK. I’ve managed to raise over £3000 so far and hope to reach the target of £5k by this Sunday!"

I’m running the Cambridge Half Marathon to challenge myself to beat my times from when I was a rower and as an excuse to spend a weekend visiting Cambridge."
