King's Calculating Women

A free residential event for Year 11 female students from UK-based state schools. The two day residential is designed to demonstrate the real-world relevance and applications of maths-based skills, and to reveal the diversity of industries and careers to which maths skills and a maths-based degree can underpin. 

What's Involved?

The two day event will take place from the 16-17 April 2025. This highly interactive event will give attendees an opportunity to work with peers on fun maths-related activities, such as solving puzzles and brainteasers. All academic sessions will be led by our College Fellows. 

During the event, attendees will also have the opportunity to meet females who have either graduated from a maths-based degree or currently work in a primarily mathematical-focused field. 

There will be exciting social activities run by current students interspersed throughout the residential. 

All attendees will stay overnight in College on the 16th April. An evening meal will be provided in the King's College Dining Hall and breakfast and lunch will be provided on the 17 April. 

How much does it cost?

This event is completely free to attend.

Travel expenses will be covered for students who can provide evidence of eligibility for free school meals (FSM). We may also cover expenses for students who are not eligible for FSM but can provide evidence of a household income below median average earnings in the UK. Where will the event take place?

The event will take place at King's College, University of Cambridge. Attendees will be required to stay overnight in student accommodation. 

Eligibility Criteria and selection 

Female identifying students from UK state schools who are currently in year 11, and are predicted at least a 7 in GCSE Maths (England), an A in GCSE Maths (Wales and Northern Ireland), or an A at National 5 Maths (Scotland)

To take part in this event, you can apply via our online form. The deadline for completing the form is: 5pm on Monday 10 March 2025. 

The event is open to all who meet the above criteria, but in the event of being oversubscribed, students will be selected based on widening participation criteria.

The @TrinCollCam Musical Theatre Programme is a brand-new scheme which offers outstanding vocalists from across @cambridgeuniversity the chance to work over the academic year with internationally-recognised voice teacher @CameronORichardson. 17 students were chosen for the pilot programme from a large number of applications and they have had coaching sessions over the year. The concert on 8 May was the culmination of that work and an opportunity to showcase the musical theatre talent in the University. Part of this first cohort is King’s MPhil student @kaetlyn_liddy (Social Anthropology) who told us as she crossed the Front Court on her way to this very special concert: “I’ll be singing a song called ‘I Wish It So’ from the musical Juno. I’ve learned so much from the Trinity Musical Theatre Programme, particularly from my individual lessons with Cameron Richardson-Eames. Making progress as a singer can sometimes be very gradual or subtle, but I have learned so quickly and effectively in my time with Cameron. Pursuing a career in musical theatre is something I have always been interested in, but I’ve historically found it difficult to balance my academic and artistic goals. This programme has not only helped me develop my technique and artistry as a singer, but reminded me how much I love performing and musical theatre as a creative medium. I find music to be such a nice escape from my academic work, especially as a master’s student, and it only enhances my ability to thrive in that sphere of my life as well. I feel lucky to have been able to do both at a high level this term. It’s not a very common opportunity for most graduate students to continue a creative passion once academic work begins to get more consuming, so I’m very grateful to have been in the first cohort of this wonderful programme.”

An autographed manuscript of Jane Austen’s 'Sanditon' has gone on loan to Harewood House in Yorkshire as part of their new exhibition ‘Austen and Turner: A Country House Encounter’.
