TSA_PDF x SVA is ab exhibition curated by Tiger Strikes Asteroid with the School of the Visual Arts in New York City. It is a special edition of TSA_PDF exhibition series featuring the work of participants from The Artist Residency Project at SVA NYC.
Tiger Strikes Asteroid, tigerstrikesasteroid.com, is a non-profit network of independently operated, artist-run exhibition spaces with locations in Philadelphia, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Greenville, South Carolina. Their goal is to collectively bring people together, expand connections and create community through artist-initiated exhibitions, projects, and curatorial opportunities. They seek to build an ethos of cooperative achievement in the visual arts, creating the physical and emotional space for artists to show their work and exchange ideas on their own terms. The artist-run model expands the artist’s role beyond that of studio practitioner to include the roles of curator, critic, and community developer and provides an alternate model to the conventions of the current commercial art market.
During the SVA Summer Residency, a global group of artists worked across various media and approaches, making this collection an exciting sampling of the international art scene. The Artist Residency Project was a fully online residency program and had its first iteration in the summer of 2020. It was designed for fine artists working across discipline, medium and platform. Through online platforms, it aimed to deliver a robust, global residency experience. Working with SVA’s distinguished faculty, participants developed their practice without the limitations of location or the necessity for travel.
The goal of The Artist Residency Project is to create an inclusive online space where artists can thrive, nurture their practice and build an active, engaged community.
The Tiger Strikes Asteroid ethos and the PDF exhibition model is one inspirational way that King’s College Members may contribute to a community of visual arts practice and share art using an on-line platform.
