50 years after women were first admitted to King’s College, how does gender continue to influence their academic experiences and outcomes? In 2022, is the College still a ‘male college admitting women’, as a 1993 conference debated, or has it become a more inclusive space for all genders?

This panel event will present the results of two surveys on gendered experiences at King’s undertaken in Easter 2022, along with broader metrics on gender ratios and gender attainment gaps. The surveys were produced as part of a student-led initiative to update the College’s 1990 ‘Report on women in higher education’, written by social anthropologist Andrea Spurling after two years of research on-site.

Andrea Spurling saw her work as just one step in the process towards achieving gender equality in academia and, more specifically, at King’s: in this spirit, the new project aims to take stock of both the advances and gaps in gender equality within the College since the publication of the initial report. A second, qualitative phase of research based around in-depth interviews will be launched at the event.

Panel members will include: Professor Caroline Humphrey, one of the College’s first female Fellows; Professor Chryssi Giannitsarou, College Fellow and lead researcher on Project CAPER, tracking research output in economics to quantify the gendered impacts of the pandemic on researchers; and student representatives.

Audience members will be encouraged to ask questions and share their own experience of life at King’s, as well as their vision for gender equality in the College.

The event will be followed by a drinks reception to invite further, informal discussion.

The event will be held in the Keynes Hall and the Chetwynd Room. Although it is free to attend, booking is required as seating is limited.
