Student Access and Support Initiative (SASI)

Body

In 2018 we launched our major Student Access and Support Initiative (SASI), to transform our access and outreach activity and put in place a range of innovative programmes aimed at helping students from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds to get to King’s, and be fully supported once here.

The earlier cohorts benefitting from SASI are now graduating, often with Firsts. They take their King’s experience into the widest range of career paths, and many go on to further graduate level study and research.

A gift to the Student Access and Support Initiative will help us strengthen and expand the transformative programmes the College can provide - from post-offer, pre-A level exam mentoring and tutoring to helping offer-holders prepare for life and study at Cambridge, and additional financial help when needed - and ensure that the work to improve equality of access and opportunity can continue.

The generosity of King’s has been incredible. Never doubt that giving to student hardship funds makes a difference. It makes all the difference in the world – thank you.

Summer Research Programmes

Body

The King’s Summer Research Programmes offer undergraduate students at King's in the early and middle years of their degree the chance to gain hands-on research experience on projects covering areas across the sciences and the arts and humanities. Research at undergraduate level can be a first stepping stone to a future academic or research-led career. It provides a great opportunity for students to gain an understanding of the research environment and obtain new skills, and the College is delighted to be expanding its support for undergraduate students in this area.

The programmes provide exciting opportunities for King’s students to work with King’s Fellows and College Research Associates on focused research projects for a 6 –10 week period over the summer vacation. Participating students will receive an award to cover subsistence for up to 10 weeks and will be offered subsidised accommodation in College.

Applications for the 2026 Summer Research Programme will open in Lent Term 2026.

Susan Tomes Music Prize

Body

The Susan Tomes Music Prize recognises music making that has a positive impact on the College community. "It is not only for classical music," commented Susan Tomes. "It could be any sort of music - even someone who plays their instrument so beautifully in their College room that people open their windows to listen.”

The prize is open to undergraduate and graduate King’s students, and nominations can be made by students, Fellows and staff.

Nominations open in Lent Term (all at King's will receive a webform by email) and closing date for entries is 1 June.

The winner is then selected by a judging panel and up to two prizes of £350 each will be awarded in Easter Term.

About Susan Tomes

Susan Tomes was the first woman to read music at King’s, arriving in 1972 as part of the first cohort of female undergraduates. She is one of the UK’s most renowned concert pianists and the author of seven books.

To mark the 50 years since she was a student at King’s, Susan decided to establish the Susan Tomes Music Prize to recognise music-making that has a positive impact on the College community artistically or emotionally. The Prize will be awarded at the end of Easter Term every year for as long as funds exist.

Support the Chapel and Choir

Body

King’s College Chapel is globally significant. Its architecture, acoustics and organ shape the distinctive sound of the College Choir.  Maintaining this iconic building and ensuring it is well preserved for the future is a priority.

A gift to the Chapel and Choir will support critical works including the conservation and repair of the unique medieval stained glass and magnificent woodwork, contributing to the protection of this extraordinary place for generations to come. It will also help maintain the great tradition of the Choir and the exceptional musical education it provides, as well as the Anglican tradition of worship conducted in this sacred space.

The architectural majesty of the Chapel, the extraordinary musical quality of the Choir and the inspirational dignity of the services are admired and loved by millions of people across the world. Philanthropic support from alumni, friends and supporters is vital as we work together to maintain the fabric of the Chapel, continue to offer beautiful liturgies and ensure the sustained excellence of our choral music.

The Future Fund

Body

A gift to the Future Fund allows the College the flexibility to respond to the most immediate and greatest needs - whether that’s helping a student in unexpected need, the refurbishment of a room, additional resources for the Library, or supporting the work of the Chapel and Choir.

It also gives us the potential to invest your donation into the general endowment, and boost the future income of the College in perpetuity. With a gift to this unrestricted fund, we can use it in the best way for the moment, enabling us both react to circumstances and also seek opportunities. It is one of the most important ways in which you can help King’s.

King’s has already proven itself highly adaptable at meeting changing circumstances; it’s hugely important that as donors we support the Future Fund, which ensures that the College has adequate financial resource and the flexibility to direct support to meet both present requirements and as yet unidentified future need.

Welfare and Mental Health

Body

The care of our student body goes beyond their finances.

Some students find being away from home hard, others have or develop negative thoughts and habits which distract and detract from their study and enjoyment of the Cambridge experience.

Established by the generous bequest of Dulcie Brian, the widow of the late Michael Vaughan Brian (KC 1937), for "students in need", further alumni donations have enabled the fund to appoint a resident Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, and your donations continue to support our work in caring for students and educating the community about mental health awareness.

Many people don’t realise the range of health challenges and life experiences that some students bring with them to King’s. There’s often an assumption that everyone who arrives here has had the same opportunities — but that’s far from the case.
Donations to the Student Welfare and Mental Health Fund enable us to provide a strong, inclusive wellbeing programme — one that empowers all our students to achieve their full potential.

The Supplementary Exhibition Fund (S.E.F.)

Body

The Supplementary Exhibition Fund  (S.E.F) was established in 1886 by King's Fellows and Alumni who recognised that those students without Scholarships were at risk of financial hardship, and were potentially unable to enjoy their Cambridge experience to the full.

Today the S.E.F. is the primary resource for the College to address student hardship and financial distress and, combined with the Cambridge Bursary Scheme offered by the University, provides cover for living expenses, travel, medical care and any equipment needed to help a student advance in their studies.

As financial pressures increase, we’re going to see the call on hardship funds grow. They can be an absolutely fundamental lifeline, covering all sorts of circumstances; and sometimes making the difference in whether a student can stay and complete their studies or not.

King's societies

From rowing and politics, to the Entrepreneurship Lab and Music Society, there is a King's society for everyone. Students at King's can help run formals, organise the King's Affair, put on a show or host a charity event. If you can't find a society that suits you, we can help you set one up. To join a society, come along to a freshers fair or email the Sports, Societies and Freshers Officers.

Student governance and representation

The two student bodies of the College, King's College Student Union (KCSU) and King's College Graduate Union (KCGU), contribute to the intellectual, cultural, and social life of the College. Both the KCSU and KCGU have representatives on the committees dealing with the governance of the College, and both are involved in decisions on the allocation of funds between sporting, musical, drama, and other societies. The KCGU website is currently under construction.

Both unions hold open meetings throughout the year and all members can bring and discuss matters relating to the union. Students can run for executive positions such as the President, LGBTQ+ Officer, or Chair.
