What can we learn about Great Compassion beyond boundaries from the mural of  Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva in the Dunhuang Grottoes of the Tang dynasty? This talk
examines the details of the Guanyin Sūtra mural, related manuscripts from the Library Cave, and Buddhist canonical and literary sources. It explores what these materials reveal about the spread of Avalokiteśvara’s Great Compassion across medieval societies along the Silk Road.

Irene Lok is a Visiting Scholar at the Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Cambridge and a Senior Member of Robinson College, University of
Cambridge. She is also a Visiting Research Fellow at the Dunhuang Academy. Her studies mainly examine textual and artistic evidence to understand medieval Chinese Buddhism through manuscripts and murals in Dunhuang and Turfan along the Silk Road.
