Fees and Finance

King's collects the same tuition fees, on behalf of the University, as other Cambridge colleges. Students at King's may also have access to generous financial support.

Fee Status

Whether you qualify as a home or overseas student for fees purposes is important, as this will affect the costs you will incur and the financial support available to you. King's does not confirm fee status until after offers have been made. If you would like information about fee status before you apply, we recommend that you look at the UKCISA website (see below).

The Universities Minister for England announced on 23 June 2020 that EU nationals (except Irish nationals living in the UK or Ireland), other EEA and Swiss nationals will no longer be eligible for home fee status for courses starting after the academic year 2021-22. Please see the international pages for further information on fees and costs for international undergraduates studying at Cambridge.

Our international students contribute to making Cambridge a vibrant and diverse place in which to study and we continue to extend a welcome to those students.

Tuition Fees

Home Fee Status

For students classified as home fee status and starting their first undergraduate degree, Cambridge University charges fees at the maximum allowed by the UK government. The tuition fee for students who start their course in October 2024 is £9,250 (for all courses).

It is important to understand that home tuition fees will not need to be paid up front. Currently, home students pay their fees through government loans that are repaid after graduation, and only once a graduate earns a specific salary per year.  This salary depends on the year the student started their study, and the course they studied.  For further information on this please see the following link Repaying your student loan: When you start repaying - GOV.UK (www.gov.uk)

For details of these loans and the further financial support available please see our financial support page.

Students studying for a first undergraduate degree and classified as home fee status do not have to pay additional College fees. Their main expenditure during their time at Cambridge will be living costs.

If your course includes a year abroad, please see the further information.

Overseas Fee Status

If your fee status is "overseas" (i.e. international), you will be liable to pay tuition fees to both the University and the College.

The University tuition fee depends on your chosen course. Please check the relevant University webpage, which sets out the University tuition fees for overseas students starting in October 2024.

The College Fee at King's for overseas students starting their course in October 2024 will be £11,888 pa and will remain fixed for the duration of the course.

In addition to these fees, you will need to pay living costs.

Student Finance at Cambridge University

As a student in Cambridge your living costs are comparable with other universities in the UK, and often can be less. For UK students, a reasonable estimate for total living costs in 2024-25 is £10,950 for the three terms of the normal academic year (approximately 9 months). Overseas students should increase this figure for extra travel or accommodation costs according to their circumstances. We estimate that overseas students should allow £14,600 in 2024-25 (if remaining in Cambridge for the full 12 months).  Please use the following link for more information on living costs.

Living Costs

Rent

Unlike most UK universities, Cambridge guarantees accommodation to all undergraduate students throughout their courses. At King's, we have two types of room rental arrangement, a 29-week “short contract” and a 35-week “long contract” agreement (the latter allows you to stay in your room over the Christmas and Easter vacations). Otherwise, special permission is required to remain in College rooms during the vacations. For 2023–-24, the cheapest rent is £1,459.08 per term (for the least expensive rent band on a 29-week lease). The most expensive is £2,493.01 per term (for the most expensive rent band on a 35-week lease). The prices include heating, electricity, water, hot water, internet access, kitchen fixed charge and a charge for possessions insurance.

Meals

All students have access to College dining facilities, where you can buy cafeteria-style meals three times a day. There is a termly catering charge of £166.74 for 2023-24 included in the rental charge, which contributes to the fixed costs of the kitchens and allows students to be charged at a lower rate. A typical one-course meal is in the range £3-4.  Students do not have to eat in the cafeteria, and there are shared kitchens available in most accommodation blocks, each equipped with a fridge and microwave. Larger kitchens may also have ovens and hobs.

Travelling

Transport costs in Cambridge are minimal, as the city is small enough to walk or cycle.

Books

There are a total of 149 libraries across the university, and a very well-stocked library in King's. Specialist study needs are catered for in departmental libraries and in the main University Library. With so many libraries available you shouldn’t have to buy many books for your course.

Computers

Excellent computer facilities are available in King’s, with free internet access. Most of the current students choose to have their own computers, with high-speed internet access available in student rooms and wifi in the bar and coffee shop.

Socialising

How much you spend on socialising is your choice, but it is worth noting that, as many social events are College-based and student-run, they do not cost very much. You'll also find discounted prices at the King's bar.

Clubs and Societies

King's has a range of facilities to support all sorts of activities, from art, music and photography to a wide variety of sports. These activities are all available free or at a very reduced rate to current students. See the societies, sports and music pages.

Further Information

King's sends detailed information about finance with offer letters explaining the costs and financial support available, and what you need to do. Eligible students normally apply to the relevant student finance company (see links below). The company sends a confirmation document showing the support you are eligible for and you will be asked to send a copy to King's. Students will be required to provide full documentation that shows you have sufficient funds for the duration of your course, when requested.
