Janet Davis

Official Fellow in in Computer Science

Janet Davis has spent more than twenty years teaching and conducting research with undergraduate students at United States liberal arts colleges. Her most
recent publication, "CS2023: Computer science curriculum guidelines: A new liberal arts perspective" (Inroads 2025), is the product of an ongoing
collaboration developing a new process for mission-driven curriculum design. At King's, Janet is excited to expand her skills in small-group teaching across a
range of computer science subjects.

Janet's research in Human-Computer Interaction centres on the question, "How might we design technology to support human flourishing?" Her work bridges the
methodologies of Value Sensitive Design, Participatory Design, and Persuasive Technology. She recently developed a seminar on feminist technologies; past
projects have addressed urban planning, sustainable living, healthy sleep, and gendered language. At Cambridge, Janet is exploring work with the Cybercrime
Centre and welcomes other possible collaborations in computer science and beyond.

Janet is currently on leave from her position as Professor and Microsoft Chair of Computer Science at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington (USA), where
she has served as founding computer scientist and department chair. Janet earned her BS in computer science at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont,
California, followed by her MS and PhD at the University of Washington, Seattle.  Between graduate school and her position at Whitman, she earned
tenure at Grinnell College in lovely Grinnell, Iowa.
