College Lecturer in History & Politics

Applications are invited to an appointment to the post of College Lecturer in History & Politics at King’s College, part of the University of Cambridge. The position is fixed term for 2 years with no possibility of renewal. The post is to commence in October 2026. The role will focus on the delivery of supervision teaching to the College’s undergraduate students studying the History & Politics undergraduate degree.  The successful candidate will be appointed to a Bye Fellowship within the College for the duration of their post and will enjoy the benefits that membership of the Fellowship provides.

 

The successful candidate will work alongside an experienced team of Official Fellows in History & Politics and its cognate fields, including Richard Bourke, Pedro Loureiro, Jason Sharman, Sharath Srinivasan and John Dunn.

 

Responsibilities. The role will involve delivering small group teaching in constituent papers in the History & Politics Tripos degree, in particular the papers in the History of Political Thought and International Politics, which include Pol.1 The Modern State and its Alternatives; HP1 Argument and Evidence, HP3 Theory and Practice in History and Politics; Pol.2 International Conflict, Order and Justice; Pol.3 International Organization and possibly other more specialised second- and third-year papers.

 

Additionally, the successful candidate may be asked to assist with Direction of Studies, which involves coordinating teaching of other papers and ensuring students are making good progress; interviewing prospective undergraduate students and assisting with admissions; and other tasks which may be necessary for organising and delivering History & Politics teaching at the college. The successful applicant will also have the freedom to pursue their own research interests around their teaching responsibilities.

 

Person Specification. The successful applicant will be required to hold a PhD in History or Politics (or be close to achieving this), preferably in an area cognate with the Colleges’ Teaching needs, and be well versed in the delivery of small group teaching in a supervision-style context.  Details of the papers offered by the Cambridge History Faculty and Department of Politics and International Studies can be found at: https://www.hist.cam.ac.uk/ and https://www.polis.cam.ac.uk/ 

 

Desirable criteria include experience with delivering small group teaching, and familiarity with undergraduate interviewing. The successful applicant would be expected to reside in or near Cambridge during term time and take an active part in the wider academic life of the College.

 

Benefits. The starting salary is £38,636pa, based on the King’s College scale for College Teaching Officers.  A college office will also be provided for teaching and academic study, single residential accommodation at subsidised rates may be available.
