Tomás Luis de Victoria’s Requiem stands as the crowning achievement of Spain’s greatest Renaissance composer, and a masterpiece of the Spanish Golden Age. Written in 1603 for the funeral of the Dowager Empress Maria of Austria, this Mass for the Dead evokes a profound sense of peace rather than grief. The beauty and luminous stillness in its slow-moving harmonies and closely-woven vocal lines turn sorrow to solace, mourning to consolation.
‘[The Tallis Scholars’] tonal purity, articulation, ensemble spirit: everything here is sheer perfection.’ THE TIMES
