King’s College Organ Scholar Paul Greally has recently been awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists (FRCO). In doing so, Paul also won all four of the available prizes to candidates in his examination cohort.
A first-year Music student at King’s, Paul started as Organ Scholar in September 2020. He previously spent three years as a joint first study composer and organist at the Royal Academy of Music Junior Department. He is also formerly the organ scholar of Pinner Parish Church.
As well as being awarded his FRCO, Paul won all four available prizes:
- the Limpus, Shinn and Durrant prize for the highest practical mark;
- the Harding and Durrant prize for the highest mark in written papers;
- the Lawrence Phelps prize for the most perceptive writing about the organ, its construction and its relationship to performance-related topics;
- the Samuel Baker prize for the highest aggregate marks for the whole exam.
Director of Music Daniel Hyde said, “I am delighted that Paul has been awarded his FRCO, and that he has been so successful in his examinations. Paul is already putting his skills to good use as we return to normality over the course of this year.”
As Organ Scholar at King’s, Paul has a range of roles and responsibilities, including playing for choral services in the Chapel, training the probationers and choristers, and conducting the full Choir from time to time.
