Former Choral Scholar becomes LPO Principal Conductor

Edward Gardner has been announced as the new Principal Conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra has announced that Edward Gardner, a former King's Choral Scholar, will become its new Principal Conductor. Edward will take up the post from the start of their 2021/22 season, and will be the first British Principal Conductor of the orchestra since the late 1960s.

Currently Chief Conductor of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Edward has also been Principal Guest Conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and the Music Director of the English National Opera. 

Edward studied at King's College, Cambridge as an undergraduate Music student, and as a Choral Scholar under the direction of Sir Stephen Cleobury.

Edward will succeed Vladimir Jurowski in the role and will initially join the LPO for five years, leading it both as resident orchestra at the Royal Festival Hall and on international tours.
