New album continues run at top of charts
An album on the King's College record label has started its fourth week at the top of the UK chart for all-classical albums. 100 Years of Nine Lessons & Carols has been at #1 since it was released in November.
The 2CD set celebrates the 100th anniversary of A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, the Christmas Eve service of lessons and carols that has taken place in King's College Chapel since 1918, and which has been broadcast around the world by the BBC almost every year since 1928. The album includes newly-recorded carols by today's choir alongside historical recordings from the original broadcasts.
Since its release the album has received critical acclaim, and has been described as "a wonderful treasure trove of outstanding singing and superlative music". It has been featured as Classic FM's album of the week.
The recording follows more critical success for the King's label thanks to the recent release of Messiaen's La Nativité du Seigneur, performed by former organ scholar Richard Gowers:
"This is deeply impressive organ playing, with King's College's sound expertly captured"
