Dr David Payne 1933-2018

King’s Fellow Dr David Payne died earlier last month, less than a week before his 85th birthday. He was born in Liverpool, attended Holt Grammar School and did his National Service with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (1951-3) before coming up to Gonville and Caius College.

He earned a First in both parts of the Mechanical Sciences Tripos and graduated in 1956 to a position at Bristol Aircraft (Filton). From there he moved in 1958 to the Nuclear Power Division of The English Electric Company Ltd. From 1960 he was a Demonstrator and Lecturer for Cambridge University, coming to King’s as a Fellow in 1963 where he was for a time Director of Studies for Engineering. Dr Payne died on January 7. 

A memorial service will be held on March 1st at 2pm at St James Church, Wulfstan Way, Cambridge.
