BBC broadcasts an Evensong from 1981

Sir Philip Ledger

BBC Radio 3 is broadcasting an Evensong recorded in 1981, when Philip Ledger was Director of Music. The Evensong will be aired on Wednesday 23 October at 3.30pm and repeated on Sunday 27 October at 3pm.

The current Director of Music, Stephen Cleobury, said: "I am delighted that BBC Radio 3 will broadcast an evensong from the archive ... conducted by my predecessor, the late Sir Philip Ledger (KC 1956).

"This will give listeners an opportunity to be reminded of the wonderful work he did with the College Choir between 1974 and 1982, when I was fortunate to inherit the marvellous instrument which he had crafted."

The broadcast is a tribute to Sir Philip, who died last November (see the news story). It was first transmitted on 11 September 1981. If you miss the two broadcast dates you can listen again on the BBC Radio 3 website.
