Eric Milner Milner-White CBE DSO OGS (1884–1963)
December's Archive of the month looks a the history of A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols and the Advent service.
Both services were started by Eric Milner-White, the Dean of King's in the interwar years. Milner-White had been an undergraduate at King's, and in 1906 attained a double first in History.
He took theological training afterwards, and during World War One he served as an army chaplain on the Western Front. He was awarded a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) in 1918.
It was also in 1918 he returned to King's as the Dean and introduced the Christmas Eve service, A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols.
