Last few days for Olympic fanfare competition

Olympic torch

This Friday 1 June is the deadline for the competition to write a fanfare for the 2012 Olympic Games.

King's is running the competition, which is for young composers to write a short piece of music for period instruments. The new composition will be played in King's College Chapel the evening before the Olympic torch is carried through Cambridge, on Saturday 7 July.

The title of the piece will be 'Gold like Fire, burning in the night', from Pindar's Olympian Ode 1. It will open a concert with King’s College Choir and the Academy of Ancient Music, conducted by Stephen Cleobury CBE, who will also be performing Mozart’s Requiem and Handel’s Dixit Dominus.

As well as being invited to attend this concert, the winner will receive £500 and an invitation to attend a reception and presentation after the performance.

For details, see the competition guidelines. For more about the concert on Friday 6 July, see Concerts at King's.
