Archive of the month: Identifying features

Benjamin Whichcot, 19th Provost of Kings

The coat of arms of Benjamin Whichcot, Provost during the English Civil War

This month's Archive of the month is called "Identifying features: coats of arms" and looks at a document first compiled by Thomas Hatcher in 1555.

The document gives short biographies of the Provosts, Fellows and Scholars of King's College from the mid-sixteenth to the late eighteenth century. Each biography is accompanied by the coat of arms of the person discussed.

The biographies give glimpses of the characters who worked in the College, and the coats of arms provide colourful and quirky examples of heraldry.

See the Archive of the month section.
