Easter at King's

kings-easter-2024-general-a3-v2-lowres7666

In the twentieth century the name of King’s College became inextricably entwined with the celebration of Christmas across the English-speaking world. The twenty-first century has seen the very welcome and appropriate balancing of this through the inception, success and growth of Easter at King’s: a festival of concerts, recitals and talks for Holy Week and Easter.

Easter at King’s returns during Holy Week this year and it is a pleasure to welcome Nigel Short and his critically acclaimed choir Tenebrae to perform on Wednesday, alongside the regular liturgies and devotions leading up to Easter Day. Also on Wednesday, you are invited to join Dean of Chapel Stephen Cherry in conversation with leading representatives of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic perspectives to consider together what God expects of victims and survivors of harm.  Of particular note this year is the ‘Stanford Celebration’ on Good Friday, marking 100 years to the day since the death of Charles Villiers Stanford. With deep connections to Cambridge, and as a former conductor of The Bach Choir, Stanford is celebrated live on BBC Radio 3 with a performance of his Stabat Mater, and at Evensong on Easter Day. On Holy Saturday, King’s College Choir and the Academy of Ancient Music will present J.S. Bach’s St John Passion, in this the 300th-anniversary year of that work.

Details of all our Holy week services can be seen in the Chapel Services Booklet.
