Marilyn Butler (née Evans, 1937 – 2014)

Honorary Fellow and literary critic Marilyn Butler FRSL FRSA FBA died on 11 March, aged 77.

Lady Butler was born in London and studied at St Hilda's College, Oxford. She made her reputation writing about Romantic authors, in particular Jane Austen in Jane Austen and the War of Ideas (1975).

She became King Edward VII Chair of English Literature at Cambridge in 1986, and was elected a Professorial Fellow of King's in 1988. She remained here until 1993, when she returned to Oxford to become the first female Rector of Exeter College. She was elected an Honorary Fellow of King's in 1995.

A Memorial Service will be held at Exeter College on Thursday 24 April at 3.30pm.
