Assessing the impacts of road traffic on British bird populations

In the past half-century many bird species have suffered severe declines across Great Britain, thought to be largely a result of habitat loss and increases in agricultural intensification. However, during this time, road traffic levels have also increased, by over 160%. Many small-scale studies have identified negative impacts of roads on birds, via mechanisms such as noise pollution and collision mortality, yet, to date, no nationwide analysis of impacts on bird populations has been attempted for Great Britain, or in fact anywhere.

I am attempting such an analysis, using data from across Great Britain to investigate how our bird communities change around roads and the extent to which roads might have affected our bird populations over the past twenty years. I am also working to predict the impacts of planned new roads and future changes in traffic levels. My research has implications for our overall understanding of the impacts of infrastructure on biodiversity and will allow better planning and mitigation of road networks both here and abroad.

The Cost of Crime: Theory, Policy and Practice in England and Wales

The 'cost' of a crime is incredibly difficult to quantify, particularly when taking into account intangible elements such as pain and suffering.

Nevertheless, such cost-of-crime estimates are already a fixture in England and Wales and are frequently used to assess the viability of new and existing crime reduction initiatives.  Especially during times of austerity, when calls for cost-benefit analyses are stronger than ever, it is vital that the cost estimates used are as robust as possible.

Since the official cost-of-crime estimates for England and Wales were calculated, there has been a major development regarding the best method used to quantify the intangible costs. This talk will discuss the first pilot study of this new method, for England and Wales and its implication for policy and practice.
